GMail IMAP and Attachment Workaround

November 28th, 2007

We’ve been having some attachment problems at work recently since shifting over to using IMAP on our Google Apps for Domains service. After some trawling it seems the solution is a relatively simple one:

Change these two values in Thunderbird’s advanced configuration editor to “false“.

Language Independence Makes You Stronger

November 22nd, 2007

Random Post PicI was simply going to post a comment @ this blog but Alanis Morissette is telling me to make a post instead. I’ve always been a strong believer in learning more than one language for two major reasons:

1. A good programmer programs
They don’t work. I’ve always found the best programmer is someone who codes for fun, passion and enjoyment. They don’t do it as a means to an end, to make money or simply to be employed. If you only code to earn a wage then maybe you need to take a long look at yourself because you’ll never be anything more than mediocre at it.

2. Each teaches you Something about the other
Without Rails I would never have bothered using the MVC pattern in my web development. I’m not a better PHP developer for it. Without learning Java I would never have done OO. Without Python I would never have bothered with lambda functions. Without Ruby I would never have had the joy of iterating with blocks. Without Haskell I’d have never realised how lucky I am to know all those other languages.

So learning more than one or two is vital to your health – do it.

Hammer dZone – Make it Great

November 21st, 2007

dzone logoA few days ago Rick over at dZone called out to its memebers to get voting on the submitted articles (if you’re not sure what dZone is read my previous post). Since then the response has been vast but I personally think we can all make dZone loads better so everyone should get their suggestions sent over to the team in the hopes of getting it even better.

Some of my points so far

1. Ressurect the Blogs

Its great to hear form the developers of a great site like that but its gone deathl;y silent recently. I know I’m one to talk but come on dZoners! It’s good to talk. :)

2. More Stats

I’m a stats ferret – big time. I’ve been voting, commenting and watching my stats solid now for the past week. Its become addictive and so I want more, more more. Maybe even some graphs.

3. API Access

Open up the platform like Digg and provide API access to the system.

4. View Members Comments

At the moment it’s possible to view other members posts, votes, etc but not their comments.
